What is Natural Lacquer?
Since ancient times, natural lacquer derived from the Sumac tree has been valued not only for its beauty but also for its medicinal properties. This "pure natural" resin is harvested by carefully cutting the tree’s bark to collect a white, viscous emulsion, which hardens into a resilient coating. The harvesting process is incredibly intricate — artisans must cut the bark precisely in the middle of the night, switching clam shells every few seconds to preserve the lacquer’s purity. Remarkably, a single lacquer tree yields only about 10 kg of raw lacquer in its lifetime, and it takes resin from 3000 trees to produce just 1 kg of finished lacquer.
