For over 2,700 years, mother-of-pearl has been shaped by human hands into shimmering fragments of light. Drawn from abalone and pearl oysters, each shell is hand-cut, polished, and inlaid into wood or lacquered surfaces, revealing soft iridescence that shifts with every angle. In the Tang dynasty, a five-stringed pipa—its surface glowing with shell spirals and a camel-riding musician—was gifted to Japan, echoing the harmony of craft, music, and diplomacy.
